Earth Week Activities

Have you noticed the 60+ garden beds in Marine Park are finally getting the tender loving care they need? When you walk in the park, it is clear that people care tremendously about the upkeep of the designed and natural landscapes. This Earth Week, we want to share some of the ways Marine Park Alliance volunteers help the NYC Parks Gardeners with their greening duties.

Monday, April 19: Our Horticulture Volunteers prep the Carro Center garden beds for the season. This is a new group in 2021 pitching in to learn from Marine Park’s Lead Gardener before applying to the professional horticulture certificate programs at New York Botanical Garden and Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Thursday, April 22: Marine Park Alliance is a member of The Parks and Open Space Partners organizing a Mayoral Forum on this date so candidates can express their attitudes towards critical greenspaces in New York City. Click to register for the forum here. It’s open to the public.

Friday, April 23: With NYC Parks we plant white flowering dogwood trees south of the rose garden and a multi-stemmed magnolia tree at Seba Playground. At the same time, our partners at Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, the UN-affiliated Olof Palme Peace Foundation and Assemblywoman Jaime R. Williams restore a triangle planting bed near Avenue U with beautiful native species.

Sunday, April 25: Wrap up the week by getting your hands in the earth to beautify the park. All are invited! Sign up here. Can’t pitch in in person? We accept donations of any amount on our website, using this link. Support us and your local florist, LV Flowers, by using our code “MPA” with your purchase from May 1 to May 15.
