Past Interns & Their Experiences

Sanjana Shah answered a request on Handshake for volunteer college interns. Handshake is a career services platform for college students nationwide. As a recent communications graduate of New York University, Sanjana wanted a new experience that she could aquire remotely and that's what we were offering.  She has been researching a variety of possible funding sources and learning about nonprofits with us. We are so glad to have her help!

Mateo Savala came to intern with remote office work but the bottom of his resume mentioned his skateboard hobby. We happened to be looking to pilot a skateboard program and Mateo was the perfect person to take the lead on it and he still helped in the office too. Have a look at the great program he created in this video. Thank you Mateo!

Marine Park Alliance’s Summer 2020 intern, Alison Ettinger-DeLong, talks about her experience at the organization, explains the benefits of the internship, and discusses the logistics of how to apply here.  Her internship fulfilled many of her different interests in graphic and web design, marketing, and many more components related to urban parks.

Grace Getman, an Urban Studies and Environmental Studies double major at Fordham University, spent one semester interning at Marine Park researching the park’s formation and re-designing the Alliance’s website. Her research took her from Marine Park itself to the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Pratt Institute. Read about her experiences here.

Kadiata Kaba was entering her senior year at McGill University in Montreal when, during the summer of 2024, she had the incredible opportunity to intern with Marine Park Alliance. This internship perfectly aligned with her passions, from a love of nature to a desire to advocate for local communities. Her time here was filled with meaningful work and with an easy-going and flexible schedule.

As the summer intern, she contributed to research initiatives, including leading a focus group, designing surveys, and organizing in-person talks with the help of the whole team. What surprised her most, Kadi says, was how much she gained from this experience. At Marine Park Alliance, you’re not confined to an office, rather, you’re out in the field, connecting with community members. This hands-on approach taught Kadi so much about building relationships and gave her a real sense of fulfillment, knowing she was making a positive impact.

What made her experience truly special, though, were the people. Her supervisor, Margot, is not only a brilliant leader but also a wonderful person. And the rest of the team made every moment enjoyable and meaningful.

This experience will always be one of her favorites, and it will remain close to her heart as one of the most rewarding chapters of her journey.
